When most business owners think about insurance, they think about one thing...
"Will it pay out if something goes wrong?"
Of course that's important. After all, that's what insurance is there for.
But after more than a decade working with businesses of all sizes, I've learnt that many of the best reasons for having the right insurance have nothing to do with making a claim.
In fact, some of the biggest benefits happen long before anything goes wrong.
Winning New Business
Have you ever had a potential customer ask for a copy of your insurance certificates before they'll sign a contract?
It happens every day.
Larger businesses, local authorities and public sector organisations often have minimum insurance requirements before they'll even consider working with a supplier. Sometimes they'll specify minimum limits for Public Liability or Professional Indemnity insurance. Increasingly, they're also asking questions about Cyber Insurance.
I've seen businesses lose opportunities simply because they couldn't provide the cover a client required.
On the flip side, I've also seen businesses secure valuable contracts because they already had the right protection in place.
Insurance isn't just about protecting your business—it can actually help you grow it.
Building Trust
Imagine you're choosing between two businesses that offer similar products, similar prices and similar reviews.
One can demonstrate that they have appropriate insurance, take risk management seriously and are prepared for the unexpected.
The other simply says, "We've never needed it."
Which would you choose?
Having the right insurance sends a message to customers, suppliers and partners that you're running your business professionally and responsibly.
It's another way of demonstrating credibility.
Meeting Contractual Requirements
Many business owners only discover they need certain types of insurance after they've signed a contract—or worse, when they're about to.
Professional Indemnity, Cyber Insurance, Employers' Liability and Public Liability are all commonly required depending on the type of work you do.
I've had conversations with business owners who've won exciting new contracts, only to discover they don't meet the insurance requirements.
Fortunately, this can often be resolved quickly, but it creates unnecessary stress and sometimes delays projects.
Planning ahead makes life much easier.
Protecting Your Reputation
Not every claim means you've done something wrong.
Sometimes customers misunderstand. Sometimes mistakes happen. Sometimes allegations are completely unfounded.
Either way, dealing with legal claims, complaints or regulatory investigations can be expensive and time-consuming.
Many insurance policies don't just pay compensation if you're found liable—they also provide access to legal experts and cover defence costs where appropriate.
That support can be just as valuable as any financial settlement.
Sleeping Better at Night
Running a business is stressful enough.
You're thinking about cash flow, recruitment, sales, marketing, competitors, tax returns and a hundred other things.
Good insurance doesn't remove those challenges, but it can remove one significant worry.
Knowing that a cyber attack, accidental mistake or unexpected claim won't necessarily threaten everything you've worked so hard to build provides peace of mind that's difficult to put a price on.
It's Not About Having Insurance...
It's About Having the Right Insurance.
One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is the belief that because a business has "insurance", it's protected.
Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
Policies vary enormously. Limits differ. Exclusions exist. Businesses evolve, but insurance isn't always updated to reflect those changes.
A policy that was perfect when your business started may no longer be suitable after you've hired staff, expanded your services, signed larger contracts or started working with different types of clients.
That's why reviewing your insurance regularly is just as important as having it in the first place.
Final Thoughts
Insurance will always be there to help when something goes wrong.
But if that's the only value you see in it, you could be missing the bigger picture.
The right insurance can help you win work, satisfy contract requirements, strengthen your reputation, access expert legal support and give you the confidence to focus on growing your business.
That's why I don't see insurance as simply a policy document.
I see it as another tool that helps businesses succeed.
Providing a consultative approach to commercial insurance. Giving advice on potential risks that businesses face and ensuring that the business is fully covered against any eventuality.
