How Payment Gateways Work?

How Payment Gateways Work?

Payment gateways are like bridges that connect the merchant's ecommerce website to the payment processor's network. The process of a credit or debit card transaction through a gateway is as follows:

Every time you place an order on a website, this is what actually happens behind the scenes:

When a customer enters their card details and places an order, the payment gateway uses encryption to send the data securely to the processor.  The processor will then check that the card details are correct and that there is enough credit on the card to make payment for your order. Once this has been established, the amount will be transferred from your bank account (or credit card) into our business' merchant account. This process normally takes between 1 to 3 days depending on the gateway types and processor options you've selected.

Once this is done, the payment gateway sends confirmation of your order through to our website via an API (website-to-gateway communication).

At that point your order will be visible on our system and can then be fulfilled.

The payment will be marked as 'Pending' until the funds have fully cleared into our account, at which point it will change to 'Complete'.

Use of 3D Secure Services for Visa, MasterCard or JCB Credit Card Transactions

If you're using a Visa, MasterCard or JCB credit card to make your purchase, we'll automatically enrol you in our 3D Secure service. This is an extra layer of security that protects your card information by requiring you to enter a unique password when making a purchase.

If your card issuer participates in the 3D Secure program, you'll be prompted to enter your password each time you make a purchase. This will help to prevent any unauthorized transactions from taking place.

If you have any questions about our use of 3D Secure, please don't hesitate to contact our customer service team .

3D Secure is an authentication method introduced by Visa in 2006. It was originally called Verified by Visa and colloquially referred to as "VBV". MasterCard then launched the Online Authentication system in 2007, which was later rebranded as MasterCard SecureCode. JCB followed suit in 2008 with J/Secure.

3D Secure is a protocol used to protect against unauthorized online payments. It enables cardholders to confirm their identity with the card issuer by entering a password or other authentication information, usually a one-time code delivered to their mobile phone.
