On 17 July 2024 the new Labour Government in the UK delivered its first King's Speech.

This set out two employment-related bills it intends to introduce in the coming months.  The first is a new Employment Rights Bill and the second is an Equality (Race and Disability) Bill.

Both pieces of legislation will have a major impact on employees’ rights and will require employers to revisit may of their practices and procedures to in order to protect themselves.

 Major changes include:

  • banning zero hours contracts
  • ending the practice of ‘fire and re-hire’
  • making unfair dismissal available from day-one (subject to probationary periods
  • increasing parental leave, flexible working, sick pay rights and maternity protection
  • changing the definitions of ‘workers’ and ‘employees’
  • extending ‘equal pay’ rights to ethnic minorities and disabled people
  • changing the law relating to the minimum wage

Most of the changes are still a little way off but business who anticipate these changes and are looking to review their policies and procedures with them in mind will remain ahead of the game.
