The 3 Dashboards You Should Open Every Monday Morning

The 3 Dashboards You Should Open Every Monday…

Monday morning has a reputation for being a little chaotic.

There are emails to catch up on, meetings appearing on the calendar, messages waiting for replies and, inevitably, someone asking, “Do you have a quick update on how things are looking?”

Before you reach for your second coffee, there are three dashboards that can give you a much clearer picture of where the business actually stands.

Not 17 dashboards. Not a spreadsheet graveyard. Just three key views that answer three very important questions.

1. Your strategic dashboard: Are we on track?

First, zoom out.

It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget to check whether all that activity is actually moving the business towards its bigger goals.

Your strategic dashboard should give you a simple view of the numbers that matter most to your overall direction.

Think revenue growth, customer retention, progress towards your annual targets and other key business objectives.

The goal is not to drown yourself in data. It is to see, at a glance, whether you are heading in the right direction.

If revenue is growing but retention is slipping, that is worth knowing.

If the team is incredibly busy but progress against your annual targets has barely moved, that is worth knowing too.

A good strategic dashboard helps you spot the difference between being busy and actually making progress.

2. Your financial dashboard: Is spending under control?

Next up, it is time to talk money.

Your financial dashboard should tell you what is happening with the money coming into and leaving the business.

Cash flow, profit margins and departmental spending are all useful pieces of the puzzle.

You should be able to see which areas are staying within budget, where spending is increasing and whether those costs are delivering the value you expected.

This is particularly useful when you have multiple departments, projects or teams spending against different budgets.

Instead of waiting until the end of the month to discover that one area has gone significantly over budget, you can spot the trend early and do something about it.

Because “we'll figure it out at month end” is not exactly a financial strategy.

3. Your marketing dashboard: Are leads becoming revenue?

Marketing can generate plenty of activity.

Clicks. Impressions. Leads. Downloads. Website visits. Campaigns.

But the number that really matters is whether that activity is contributing to revenue.

Your marketing dashboard should help connect the dots between what you are spending and what you are getting back.

Look at things like advertising spend versus return, lead conversion rates and where prospects are dropping out of the pipeline.

You might discover that one campaign is generating loads of leads but very few opportunities.

Another might be producing fewer leads but significantly more revenue.

Without that visibility, it is easy to keep investing in activity simply because the numbers look impressive.

A good dashboard helps you see what is actually working.

Three dashboards. One much clearer picture.

The real value comes when these views are considered together.

Your strategic dashboard tells you where the business is trying to go.

Your financial dashboard tells you whether the money is supporting that direction.

Your marketing dashboard shows whether your efforts to generate new business are translating into results.

Together, they give you a much more complete picture of the health and direction of the business.

And ideally, you should not need to spend your entire Monday morning pulling numbers from different systems to get that picture.

The easier it is to access the right information, the easier it becomes to make decisions based on what is actually happening rather than what you think is happening.

So before you disappear into your inbox this Monday, take a few minutes to check the three dashboards that matter.

Know your goals.

Know your numbers.

Know your pipeline.

Then get on with the week.

Preferably before the coffee goes cold.
