Setting Practical and Achievable Sustainability…

Our last article provided insight on how to conduct a sustainability assessment.
After assessing your sustainability performance, the next step is to set clear goals. Ambitious targets can inspire action and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability, but they need to be realistic and aligned with your business priorities.

If you’re working towards improving your supplier scorecard results or meeting tender requirements, setting strong, measurable goals is essential.

1. Focus on Material Issues

Your sustainability goals should address the areas where your business has the greatest impact. For instance:

  • If your operations are energy-intensive, focus on reducing energy use or switching to renewables.
  • If waste is a concern, set targets for waste reduction and recycling.

By prioritising what matters most, you can maximise your positive impact while improving your scorecard performance.

2. Set SMART Goals

Sustainability goals should be:

  • Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve (e.g., reduce carbon emissions by 20%).
  • Measurable: Use data to track progress.
  • Achievable: Ensure the goal is within your reach given your resources.
  • Relevant: Align the goal with your business operations and values.
  • Time-bound: Set a clear deadline for achieving the goal.

For example, "Divert 50% of waste from landfill by 2025" is more effective than "Improve waste management." These kinds of targets not only drive improvement but also help tick key boxes on supplier scorecards.

3. Engage Your Team

Your employees are key to achieving sustainability goals. Involve them in the goal-setting process and ensure they understand their role in making progress. This can boost motivation and foster a culture of sustainability within your organisation.

4. Communicate with Stakeholders

When setting goals, consider the expectations of your stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and regulators. Clear communication ensures your efforts are recognised and reinforces your commitment to sustainability.
